Current Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Chandler, AZ

I have been working at Microchip Technology full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

Easy going people and environment, if you need more time to spend with your family, this is the place that are very flexible. As long as you finish you part, most of the boss will let you enjoy a very flexible schedule.

Cons

Microchip CEO is more like to manage the company in traditional family style. Save money, save more money, use less and less money as much as you can.
So the salary is at low range in same industry area.

I worked at Microchip Technology full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Flexible work hours, bonus pay good for upper management and sufficient for regular employees, stock purchase plan, quarterly updates directly from CEO

    Cons

Pay and 401K lower than most companies in the same industry, company operates very lean which requires long work hours, products on older manufacturing processes usually 1 or 2 generations behind the competition. Operating systems to run the business are low budget.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more money on system operations.

Former Employee - Senior Applications Engineer in Phoenix, AZ

I worked at Microchip Technology full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Learn a lot (if you're in the right role, try to get in vertical markets or specialization in a protocol)
One of the best companies in the industry
As an applications engineer, you get to wear many hats and get to work with most divisions across the company
Applications is the best division to work in
    Travel to cool places internationally
Safe. Don't think they've ever laid off outside of the fab
Can easily work 35-40 hours a week
Upper management knows what they're doing

    Cons

It's really hit or miss for which boss you have. Try to get a boss that's younger. I feel bad for saying this, but the older ones there are mainly because they've just been there for so long.
    Cubicle forest
    Depressing colors, little natural light
    Mediocre cafeteria food (It's monotonous)
Not a lot of young people
Promoted based on how long you've been there more than on merit
Slow turnaround for projects, you'll be working on a product family for more than a year
Not a ton of vacation. Start wtih 2 weeks.
    Average to below average pay
    Decades old technology

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seriously need to clean house in some areas. It's a lean company which I can respect a lot, but it's not very efficient when you have a lot of inept people
Need to focus more on merit vs time at company
Culture is a big focus, but it's such a bland and boring workspace
