I have been working at Microsoft full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

good salary, good benefits, smart people

Cons

no check and balance for horrible managers
MS Poll results largely ignored
lots of power grabbing amongst individuals trying to make a name for themselves

Advice to ManagementAdvice

if someone consistently gets horrible managerial feedback, get them out of management, or get them training to become better. Pay attention to the attrition rate, and take the time to talk to people who are disatisfied to see if there is a common theme taking place.

    I worked at Microsoft full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Mature company. Job security. Decent compensation. OK work-life balance (can depend on team)
    - Still a lot of smart people around, so there's opportunity for junior folks to learn a lot about software business from more experienced employees.
    - Pockets of interesting projects around the company.

    Cons

    - Losing stinks. Microsoft is not doing well in areas considered "cool" these days (e.g. online and mobile space). The core technology is under assault from many, many factors.
    - Since company isn't growing as fast as it did in the eighties/nineties, there's severe limitations for ambitious senior folks, particularly on a management track. Most people will encounter this around the senior to principal level, where promotions slow to a grind. If you're OK just earning a good paycheck and doing roughly the same thing for years, then this is probably acceptable (just remember, it could be worse).
    - Politics are rife, to say the least. Technology roadmaps aren't always based on what makes the most sense for customers, but rather the flashiest deliverables for the partner-level manager in charge (doesn't happen everywhere, to be fair, but happens a lot more than it should).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Sometimes, it's obvious when the very top person-in-charge has run their course. It might have been a good run, but there comes a time when a switch is necessary (think the end of Michael Eisner's time at Disney) for the next step forward. That time is quite likely here for Microsoft; it just has to be ready to accept that.
