I have been working at Microsoft as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Some of the best reasons to work at Microsoft are your fellow team members. Oftentimes you form bonds that can be as close as family, especially on the right team. You learn that you are each others best support.

    Cons

In some cases management is very resistant to critique and criticism. Especially middle and upper management. They tend to not view the contributions of contractors (or at least not openly) as much as they should.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your contractors more in some situations. Some of us truly do care about the company, and have ideas that are meant to serve not just the customer, but the company as well. Sometimes this does mean making an investment in time and manpower, but will yield results.

I worked at Microsoft full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Lot of opportunity, challenging work, good training (continuous). Looks good on your resume.

    Cons

Barely legal rating rating scale. Low level managers are forced to rate on all levels of this scale, regardless of commitment attainment. Lowest scale level is at risk of termination. Right around year 8-9, it is hard to keep your job. If you make it to 11 years, there is some modicum of job security.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manage, don't dictate. Also, try motivating, not "de-motivating" employees.
