I worked at Microsoft full-time (more than a year)

Pros

The leads truly care about their teams, and really care about the product and mission. Your work affects millions of users and you get a chance to work at the forefront of enterprise and consumer technology.

Cons

Sometimes it feels like there's a huge distance between the engineers on the ground versus those that make the big decisions that affect the whole company.

Great place, even for a contractor

    I worked at Microsoft

    Pros

Working for Microsoft is a great experience. The folks are very bright, and even if you are there for a short time, as I was, you should walk away with more knowledge than when you started.

    Cons

As a contractor, it can be tough. Trying to get the proverbial 'foot in the door' to make it full time is the goal of most, and they know it. So, they can play that up to get you to work a little harder to go full time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make the transition from contract to full time a little more transparent.

Products are in disrepair. Absent management. Dismal morale. Culture of apathy.

I have been working at Microsoft as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Wages are high, resources are plentiful, and you will meet a lot of great, very smart people. It is an easy company to get into for building career quickly.

    Cons

Morale is dismal. Work areas are over-crowded to an extreme and are very loud. Employees are forced to use experimental software and tools, so nothing stays the same for two days in a row. Critical resources fail continually. Managers are not given sufficient authority, time, or resources to manage. Clear instructions are rare. Burn-out rate is high, people leave too frequently for teams to be reliable. The culture is inline with that of tired people that do not feel important: Apathetic, profane, hostile. Lots of drugs and alcohol. Not good for anyone with a family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire your workforce. Give people ownership of their jobs and they will take ownership of your vision. Insist on providing a physical environment that people actually want to be in. Do not allow critical developments to be dependent on experimental software.
