Former Employee - Senior Program Manager in Redmond, WA

I worked at Microsoft full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

strong values, smart people - great benefits, location and pay.

Cons

Lack of innovation due to dysfunctional management review system. Tablet PC is an example of innovative being undermined by internal politics. Same with XBOX neglecting a Blueray player but the real problem is the over engineering and lack of vision for Office and Windows.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage teams to work together rather than compete against each other.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Get a chance to work with really bright people and learn a lot. Microsoft has a complete stack of technologies, so opportunities abound.

    Cons

Highly competitive atmosphere (not necessarily a con). The company could be quicker in its development processes, but there is an air of improvement.

Former Employee - Operations Engineer in Redmond, WA

I worked at Microsoft full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Constantly working on bleeding edge software with large budgets to support projects
Ability to grow knowledge of various technological disciplines

    Cons

Tons of office politics. Since the reviews are based on a popularity contest is you are not everyone's best friend you get constantly screwed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the personal review system, base it off of the team's progress and the individuals contribution to the teams success or failure
