I have been working at Microsoft full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Microsoft cares for you and wants you to be successful

Cons

Sometimes your peers are better at doing politics vs programming which is unfortunate but I guess any place with this many number of people is bound to have this.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time

    Pros

Lot's of different products to contribute and opportunities to explore.

    Cons

Too much bureaucracy and politics, the company is too big and moves too slow, too much coordination between large groups makes it close to impossible to make a positive impact.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce the number of layers in the company hierarchy, make room for people who want to create something new.

I worked at Microsoft full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Compensation is competitive
    - Still a lot of smart people there
    - Big company with the resources to do what they want
    - Plenty of stuff to be learned

    Cons

    - Easy to miss broader tech trends and not learn technologies the rest of the world uses
    - Microsoft is still very Windows-centric even though the rest of the world isn't
    - Work/life balance can get miserable
    - Office politics and culture are sometimes poisonous

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Focus on standards and true interoperability...you do a great deal of lip service without really delivering
    - Stop being so Windows-centric
    - Find ways of keeping employees out of the "Microsoft bubble" and ensure they're connected to broader trends in technology
    - Give up on phones and search

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO
