I worked at Microsoft

Pros

smart people to work with and it is free to do what you like and can do research on popular tech

Cons

Cannot make real code but only ideas and demos. Microsoft is not good at internet dev. I don't like to work under windows.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The leader is nice in Microsoft, not that tough. But they are push, you have to finish and implement your ideas very quickly.

I have been working at Microsoft

    Pros

    Health benefits are good. Reputation.

    Cons

Upward mobility, senior management, politics are horrible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more willing to take chances and make hard decisions. Don't play it safe all the time. More rewards and recognition for middle management.

    I worked at Microsoft

    Pros

Great benefits, stability, stock awards that are always worth something.

    Cons

Collapsing under its own weight. Giant orgs with design by committee leading to mediocre products. The malaise and decay is obvious in every hallway and every meeting - and there are hundreds of meetings. MS will keep going another 10 years from the two cash cows but there isn't anything else driving profits (same story for last 15 years). Question is how long does it take for a supertanker to stop - that's how long MS has left. Between Google, Apple, Nintendo and Amazon the writing is on the wall for MS - the emperor has no clothes and the mountains of cash from Office and Windows can only hide the pitiful execution for so long.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop looking for the magic instant billion dollar idea and grow something from scratch - Ballmer laughed at the iPhone in 2007 and with great execution and perseverance Apple has killed MS' phone business in less than 3 years.
