Pros

You get great benefits but pay is poor. There is plenty of overtime if you want to spend all of your time in a juvenile prison.

Cons

You may think you're going to help the youth incarcerated at PACC but you work with the worst of the worst youth. Once you work at PACC for awhile you will see that most of the youth you are 'treating' are just doing what they need to do to go home but are not really changing for the better. Very frustrating work and takes a lot out of you. While you should expect danger in a detention environment, you would also expect to be compensated for your troubles. The pay is poor and part time employees make more an hour than you will if you work full-time. If you're smart, ask for part time when applying, because it's nearly impossible once you've been there awhile. There is also the good ole mandate list at PACC which can keep you from going home or meeting your outside obligations. If someone calls off you could be stuck working an extra shift to make sure the facility is in ratio. If you're a recent college grad, keep looking for a job. Don't waste your time with this place, there is extremely high turnover and a high burnout at this place. Oh and promotions are based on who you know rather than experience a lot of times. Yeah you should also know there is a good chance you will be assaulted by a youth while working there so pay attention in SCM training because you will be using it.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your floor staff. New employees are treated much better than the veteran staff who have proven themselves to the company. Also, take into account what the staff are dealing with daily before making everything about the youth. Remember the youth locked up at your facility are there for a reason and it shouldn't be comfortable. When the moral of the staff goes down, it becomes clear that the youth end up suffering because a large number of staff quit at one time which leads to more unhappy staff because more mandations occur. Could be a great facility if the staff were paid a decent wage and the staff were put above the youth in some things because in reality the youth don't choose to be locked up there.

    Pros

Benefits for full time staff are excellent
Pay for part time staff is good

    Cons

You constantly need to watch everything you say and do because people get fired left and right. You can't trust most of your fellow staff to back you up regarding anything unless you're the "clique" type and all of you regularly hang out outside of work. The rumor mill is awful. The place is a revolving door of staff. Pay is not worth the risk of what can happen to you in this type of place. Upper management treats supervisors like kids. Staff are always told to give their opinions about helpful changes, but are punished for giving them. You WILL be mandated to stay past your scheduled shift.. staff constantly call off. Staff are not cared about whatsoever unless they have been deemed a favorite. Sups talk crap about staff in front of other staff. No advancement opportunity. Employee morale is always terrible, You are expected to have no life outside this place, You may need to work doubles on holidays etc etc

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take better care of your staff; Put an end to the horrible rumor mill; If people make a minor mistake, train them better rather than fire them immediately; Listen to staff.

I have been working at Mid-Atlantic Youth Services full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Working with the youth, employees, families and community is great and a wonderful experience.

    Cons

Owners and upper management that only care about the MONEY and putting on a front. Supervisors who are selected that lack any management skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Supervisors may want to set a example. Sex with co-workers in offices! Drinking during company picnics and on the clock? Just a few making a very bad name in the community.
