Pros

Mobile usage is on the rise, which puts Millennial directly in the center as the 3rd biggest, and largest independent player in the rapidly evolving mobile advertising space, directly competing with Apple and Google. You have the opportunity to have your skills pushed in directions that won't happen at more established employers, and to network with other motivated people within the space.

Cons

The emperor has no clothes when it comes to the "Millennial Experience;" the benefits are nearly non-existent, change is quick and reactionary, and if you're in IT, you will be in a position to always take the blame, and never the credit.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit talking about how great the company, the culture, and its opportunities are, and offer up the benefits that can easily be found elsewhere in the DC/Baltimore area. The IPO's over, and the stock options granted even recent pre-IPO employee hires were nothing to write home about.

You need to clean house on IT management and directly and adequately address low employee morale, which the engagement survey(s) clearly illustrate(d); this does not mean more happy hours, ping pong tournaments, or anything else that does not sufficiently address employee satisfaction.

Technology management hasn't a clue about how their operation is currently run, let alone how it should be run, and is full of toxic managers that only manage up, whom are only interested in pleasing important players in the company, while pushing all the blame and work down, yielding, at times, a pretty pathetic work-life balance.

Take note of the other people within the company, outside of IT, who seemed to be pretty happy, and upwardly mobile.

Millennial could have been a really stellar place to work, but instead, senior management has decided to put their heads in the sand, instead of providing a truly great place to work; they will just say how great the place is over and over as loud as they can, with pretty graphics and gimmicks.

    Pros

The company has undergone a lot of changes, but the people who are still at the company, including the CEO, really want to be here and really want to see us succeed. If you want to move up and don't mind working hard, this is a great place to take on as much as you can handle. The opportunities are there.

    Cons

Things move very fast, so if you're the kind of person who doesn't do well with things changing, this is probably not the place for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Since the new CEO has joined, the communication of what we should be focusing on as a company has gotten better and better. Keep sharing the vision for the company with the team. The new head of HR has also made a great difference already and it is obvious she cares about helping employees find balance.

I have been working at Millennial Media full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company culture is fantastic in that it still has a very start-up mentality. If something is broken, you have the liberty to propose a solution and make a change. Since working here, I've had two incredible managers who genuinely care about my growth and future opportunities. They fight for what's best for me, even when it might benefit them to keep me where I am. The company has progressed significantly in the time I've been here. The sales team is equipped with an incredible set of resources that did not exist 3 years ago. Employees genuinely care about each other and although there is a competitive environment, it is friendly.

    Cons

The primary challenges of working here have to do with the HR department. The HR department has not been a place where you would ever trust confidential information to be stored. Additionally, their policies come across as arbitrary and create significant opportunities to lose valuable employees. However, the new head of HR has already begun remedying this situation. It will be interesting to see the shift as her policies take effect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward the people who work the hardest for you and pour their energy and time into making you successful. Communicate clearly and set accurate expectations.
