I have been working at ModCloth

Pros

* Start up culture
* Collaborative
* Young, enthusiastic and passionate employees
* Creative
* Cutting edge/open to exploring new ideas and technology
* Founders are cool

Cons

* C-level execs not in alignment
* Becoming very process oriented and not nimble
* Execs too much in the day-to-day business and in the weeds
* Too much deference to C-level execs to make decisions...leading to delayed and poor decisions
* Execs not setting long-term strategy and direction of the business
* Creativity valued more than business performance

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on keeping that startup culture that got you to where you are today. Empower your employees at all levels to perform. Kill the over-management and bureaucracy that's slowing growth and frustrating people. Hire carefully at senior level. Exec team is already too big.

    I have been working at ModCloth

    Pros

    Really great benefits. People who are committed to their work and friendly.

    Cons

    Problems seem to be consistent on the recruiting team. Lots of turn over on this team. Not typical.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The company seems to take a cavalier approach to laying off staff when things seem to be going downhill. There is a knee-jerk reactionary approach to laying off staff then a few months later, they just re-hire a new crop of people to fill the roles they laid off prematurely. Modcloth is getting a reputation for being a revolving door for turnover.

    I worked at ModCloth

    Pros

    Great, smart, funny coworkers, great discount, great fashion, fun technologies, dogs in the office (also a con - dog poop in the office, too), high energy young company, in city location, RoR, Agile, test driven development practices, open to trying new technologies.

    Cons

    culture of fear, people are afraid to speak up. Have to agree with previous reviewer's revolving door assessment - very high turn over. also very clique-ish. there are a few people from the company's early days that seem they can do no wrong, and the company will restructure operations to accommodate them - everybody else is expendable. Retaining talent does not appear to be a priority. Executive Management very quick to place blame when there are problems rather than solve systemic problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The public shaming of employees when they are let go is bad for morale. 'Culture fit' should not be the main reason for letting people go. More focus should be on professional skills and contribution, and less on fitting into the clique. Maybe that worked with 20 employees, but ModCloth is too big for that now. Rather than blaming one after another mid-level individual employees for the company's problems, look at how the entire system can be fixed. There is a lot of potential in that little company. Perhaps the problems lie higher up the food chain than where your scrutiny is focused.
