Pros

-Role and responsibilities can be flexible depending on your expertise and interest
-Virtually no complacency--people want to be there and do their best
-Strong VC culture focused on growth and innovation
-If you're not smiling, you're doing it wrong

Cons

-Myopic strategies roll downhill and result in re-work, re-planning, re-teaching during reorganization and attrition...aim further and the line will be straighter
-Creativity can be frustrating during clear optimization tasks
-Legacy system support and agile development are practically oil and water
-Typical start-up ADD

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers can be crap funnels or crap umbrellas--it's coming down either way! Managers are responsible for the process, NOT the product, so recognize your important role in reducing friction and bringing out the best in your people. The wins belong to the bottom tier.

    Pros

Breaks are nice, pay is above average retail rates, free food every now and again.

    Cons

They try to make the company better than it seems, there are no stated rules, no structure, no guides. Promotion is solely based on how much they like you. It seems like you have either been at the company for 2-3 years or less than six months. Turnover is rampant, but no one seems to know what turnover is like or the numbers are. Criticizing the company is an ABSOLUTE no-no, you have to worship the ModCult in order to make it. This goes for ANY location- Pittsburgh, LA, SF. It is a revolving door and how terrible for a company so young with so much potential.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please have a structure, even a handbook would be great. Get a real Human Resources dept.- they are impossible to contact, impossible to file complaints anonymously about management doing inappropriate things. Temps stay temps. Everything is a facade of awesomeness, but that all slowly diminishes after a day or two. It's not even the work that is the worst part, but the fact that it is dead end and they prop it up as opportunities galore and this company is the best! Everyone falls over themselves to please management, hungry for in. But unless you at *it*, forget it. Stay away, even if the pay is a dollar more, you'll be out the door in less than six months, guaranteed.

    Pros

Some truly amazing and talented people work here. Benefits and pay are good.

    Cons

There is so much favoritism played here, and the company seems to thrive on hiring people that fit into the "ModCult". The fun and awesome environment is truly a facade, and those who believe it is real must have been drinking the Mod Kool-Aid. Execs are inconsistent and quick to blame, rather than try to promote and encourage growth and development on the team. There is no structure, and without that things are doomed to collapse.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I am speechless when it comes to management. The only suggestion I have is to wipe out this bunch and hire a new group.
