Pros

The pay is not bad for the terrible economy and for someone who does not have a degree, and some computer skills. You can stay there for a while, it is hard to be fired from the call center, unless you mess it up for yourself.

Cons

The MoneyGram call center in Lakewood, Colorado relies on an archaic, outdated interface, with unreliable soft and hardware, and shabby applications and tools. MoneyGram enforces outdated, unrewarding daily practices that fatigue and lower the moral of the entry level phone rep such as: Not recognizing the need for realistic bathroom breaks; disregarding the advocated health guidelines to look away from your computer at least 5 minutes per hour for your vision safety; No awareness of worker sedentary intervention to prevent leg blood clots; Only allowing minimal amount of breaks allowed by law for such repetitive, monotonous and sedentary positions and other all too familiar cliché examples of what a non dynamic call center based company can quickly become.
MoneyGram exercises practices such as: Hiring young, inexperienced, disposable employees expected to quit in a couple of months, or old inexperienced homemakers who they do not expect to advance. If you are white and have experience and skills at MoneyGram you will not advance unless you are in the small “white click”, or you are of Latin decent; The Phone Rep time off/vacation request always conflict with other departments’ requests (who are not even on the phones), thus you are never able to get any time off that you want or need; Treating their phone reps like a children, with disrespectful and threatening managing practices, instead of rewarding and motivating practices; No health and fatigue preventing routines where phone reps are allowed occasional off-the-phone duties as a mandatory part of their daily shift to balances out the fatigue-inducing repetitiveness and monotony of their phone duties; 30 to 50 second phone calls one right after another with no chance to breathe. I spoke so much the first week at there my voice gave out before the weekend. Terrible schedules offered. It took 3 years working there before I was able to get weekends off; there is rampant discrimination against white people at the call center. Supervisors will speak in Spanish about you derogatorily to each other in front of your face, making racist and snide remarks, assuming you wont know what they are saying, and I know this because I speak Spanish, but I never applied for a Spanish speaking position there, because sometimes customers can speak it a little too fast for me to pace myself with them. Even the janitor talks trash about the white people to the other Spanish speaking janitor helpers right in front of you.

Lastly, many departments in MoneyGram Lakewood are unproductive, monopolized, and in need of refreshing. A common practice at MoneyGram is that under qualified employees attain higher pivotal positions by manipulation, schmoozing, sleeping around, and plain seniority. There are 2 buildings on the MoneyGram grounds one is the call center, where all the “grunts” work, and the other is the west building where you go if you are lucky and can land a real position in a department such as Creative Services, or Accounting. When there is an opportunity for a qualified applicant, who is working their way up through MoneyGram, to enter such a department they are a seen as a threat to that department because they are actually capable of productivity and innovativeness. Thus these certain departments become guarded and almost impossible to break into unless you schmooze, sleep with someone, manipulate or wait forever. Hardly any opportunity of advancement in any particular field is available because the managers in these departments understand they have found a niche to exploit, in an overlooked department where they become lazy and stagnant and never have to do actual work. If you start out at the call center and have a degree in a field that should land you a job in the west building it will be frowned upon that you started out in the call center, and you will most likely not be given a chance to change or improve your career path. When you go to the other building for any purpose, you notice that all of the people who have been given promotions are young, attractive females, with little to no experience or degrees, who had once worked in the call center, which tells you how thing work there. And if you have started out at the call center, and are given an interview for a position at the west building, the interview will just be for formalities, with no intention of hiring you on, unless you are female, young and pretty. Different forms of this type of departmental corruption throughout MoneyGram are rampant. One example is the Creative Services department (Graphic Design). This male manager doesn’t even have a computer at his desk at which to do work on -or any computer or true graphic designing workspace for that matter. The work is just delegated to all the females who work under him. Departments and managers at MoneyGram remain unchecked. And the few times they are checked they are checked by management, who remain themselves, unchecked. MoneyGram is in dire need of an unbiased consulting firm to step in either secretly or openly evaluate EVERYTHING!!! Everyone in each phone department does nothing but complain about the workplace and the company when they are outside on break, and in the smoking areas. The morale is extremely low.

MoneyGram is in dire need of an unbiased consulting firm to step in either secretly or openly evaluate EVERYTHING!!! Moneygram needs to have management traning for the upper and lower management. Also they need to set new goals on how to make the employee happy, and motivate them with a reward system instead of motivating them with a punishment system.

    Pros

    The job market in Denver and Lakewood is terrible. This is a place that you can easily get employed at, if you need a job, but you will be sacrificing your integrity.

    Cons

    Corruption, Neopitism, Discrimination against white people, Favoritism, labeling, no chance for advancement, no regard for employee health or outside life. You have to either be of Latin decent, or be a part of a click, in order to gain any chance of advancing at MoneyGram.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Unprofessional, uncaring, unsympathetic, ignorant, out dated. All of senior management needs to take classes to learn about how to fight internal corruption, how to treat employees, how to think in a manner that will not lead to oppression, and typical unfairness in a call center environment.

    Pros

    The only 2 positive things I can say about MoneyGram are work-life balance and office environment. There is definitely a good work-life balance in the company due to the fact that people are not engaged so most of the employees are working 9 to 17.30 and are out of the door by 17.31. The office environment is also great, brand new building in central London with free beverages and biscuits.

    Cons

    Fast paced in a bad way. Decisions are made in hurry, then never finalised. People are not competent in most of the positions, they are not passionate about what they are doing, management spend little time on developing people, which have an impact on the atmosphere. Loads of employees are on the peak of their career, especially the ones who came from banks, burnt out, just wanting a quiet job. Culture is extremely american orientated, you have to be American and being based in Dallas in order to be in a decision making position. Don't be fooled by the job title and the salary as the company is very top heavy which makes managers (even directors) find themselves in a team of one, doing the kind of job that more junior staff is doing in other companies. No room for sharing ideas or challenging decisions as Americans decide about everything and they only need people who execute their decisions, in countries outside of the US not even directors have a decision making role. Structure change almost every month, high turnover in every areas. Lots of politics within the company. Reporting lines don't make sense most of the time. The worst company I've ever worked for, the only reasons I give 2 stars are the office environment and the work-life balance.

    Take some basic management classes and realise that you need to give feedback to your employees, invest time to coach and develop them and give them more work where they can add a value. It's not OK not to complete performance appraisal and not setting up objectives. Get rid of the consultants, they are just milking the company and the quality of their work is often questionable. Give the project work to employees so they will be more engaged as they will feel that they learn something at MoneyGram. Make people involved in the business decisions, be a lot more transparent. Do whatever is the best for the company, not whatever is the best for some privileged upper managers. Choose the best person for the job, not the one who is the nicest but have no qualification or experience to do the job.
