Pros

One of the great things about working at Monster is that there are a million analogies for being there. For instance, Product Release Cycle = the looping video game, or any other game you can't win but also can't seem to quit. It's just such a rush!

Due to all the miscommunication or utter lack of communication, there's never a dull moment.
Projects are always being shelved, canned, or going up in smoke; conference rooms filled with gaggles of otherwise friendly monstas fall deathly silent then erupt like powder kegs. Can you keep your cool when the bombs are falling needlessly on you? What an exciting time!

All the while your merry little department is huddled, inmates waiting for the next riot that will sweep the complex. Oh yes, and that happens almost weekly. Is it a re-org? Second boss you've had this week? Well, welcome to the club! That is the excitement and high adventure you can expect at Monster.

Sound like a blast? then put your feet up and make yourself at home! When it gets to be too much, Maynard is a sweet little town to wander on walkabout.

Cons

There are nefarious mustache twirling old-west villains prowling the corridors of Monster. They have eliminated all of the competent (to brilliant) and well-intentioned management which used to provide vision, inspiration and hope to the company. If a good manager rises to the top of the curdled heap or somehow slips past the doors, beware. They won't last long. Our Man Sal is running this ship into the ground, and it's powered by fear and intimidation. Old school management tactics only, so best brush up.

Be prepared to watch all of your teammates leave or be laid off due to the stress and rigors of the working environment. Anyone who can survive the continued power struggles and beat-downs at Monster is either a ghost, made of steel, or a turncoat.

    Pros

Monster Worldwide has a great work live balance. If you're interested in the job search market this is the place to be.

    Cons

Maynard is in the middle of nowhere. This isn't a technology company, it is a job search company that uses technology.

    I worked at Monster Worldwide

    Pros

Good benefits, technology, value of work to people's lives. Still a leading brand on the internet although innovations aren't getting traction they should.

    Cons

Culture of fear, declining quality of upper management, long slide from hot internet startup spirit to slow, quarterly earnings culture. Constantly switching priorities; most initiatives take many layers of approval going to the top, where they sit for months. Recent new products promising but remains to be seen whether it's too late.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You were brought in to clean up the mess left by a few bad apples at the top. You did a good job cleaning it up but the tight corporate culture, and governing by fear, is driving away the best talent. Ruling by fear means you won't hear the criticism and suggestions you need to pull out of the long dive.
