Pros

They have an excellent technology training program for folks straight out of college. New trainees are all brought together for a few weeks to train toward a common minimum denominator so they all hit the ground running, and they crete an excellent network throughout the firm. In my experience, responsibility assigned has been based on merit, so there's decent recognition of achievements and contributions. There's also a lot of support for mobility within the organization if one feels they're stagnating or want a steeper learning curve. The compensation (up until last year) was a pretty fair mix of individual performance and the larger team and firm achievements.

Cons

There are a lot of very bright people and it becomes quite difficult to differentiate yourself if you're in a large team. Promotions are hard to come by and you need to constantly push your supervisor for consideration.

Advice to Management

Anyone leading a team of 20 or more should be questioned at year end if no one in the team gets promoted. This will encourage managers to actively work towards ensuring their subordinates get the appropriate projects and visibility to merit promotions.

    Pros

Overall this is a very good company to work for. Some of the highlights are: - Morgan Stanley is full of very talented and smart people - Morgan Stnaley uses a broad technology spectrum and experiments with lots of cutting edge technology - The benefits are generally very good. (e.g. up to 3 months of paid family leave under certain circumstances, such as having a baby) - Most departments operate on very high ethical standards - Good training program - Compensation is generally very good

    Cons

Morgan Stanley is a large and some times anonymous corporation. As a result the departments can be very fragmented (eg. if you want to run a database you have to go through the dba group) My biggest gripe is that Morgan Stanley engages in extensive offshoring, especially to India, which can be a challenge and dampens morale for NY-based employees.

    Advice to Management

Reduce offshoring even if NY salaries have to be frozen/reduced.

    Pros

Great benefits package. Great corporation. Poor local business management support.

    Cons

No help growing your business. You make it or you don't. No else else is going to help though

    Advice to Management

Come outside your office from time to time and see what is going on.
