Great place for entry-level investment management experience. Learn the business.

Vice President (Former Employee)
Green Bay, WI

I worked at Morgan Stanley full-time for more than 5 years

ProsLearn basics of investment management, get experience. Morgan Stanley is as good as any other firm, and better than many. Learn the business, build some clientele. If you're smart and a hard worker it's easy to move up the ladder into executive positions without a whole lot of serious competition. Great benefits and great flexibility. If you are successful, the compensation is limitless. It can be a great company for the right individual that's a good fit for this industry.

ConsYou don't own your own business that you can pass to your children. The culture is highly dependent on the office that you work in: it can be a great culture or it can be a very lousy, dog-eat-dog culture. If you're not very successful your compensation will suffer greatly and you will eventually be cut. The senior executives take risks that are far beyond their IQ, that often result in huge losses and government bailout. The senior executives often lack focus on the core business, and stray into areas that often result in huge losses. The weakness of the firm is at the top. The firm always puts its interests ahead of the interests of its clients. Morgan Stanley is firm-centric instead of client-centric.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake less risk, understand your core business - investment management - focus on that. When you manage other people's money, you need to have a AAA rating yourself and unassailable integrity - both of which you are greatly lacking. Stop putting the firm's interests ahead of the clients' interest.
