I have been working at Morningstar full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, generous vacation, 6-week sabbatical every 4 years, relaxed environment, casual dress code, weekly bagel day, monthly patio parties in summer.

    Cons

Many employees are not paid what their peers in other companies are paid. This problem is widespread and prevalent. Company began an initiative in 2012 to provide more transparency and better expectations with regard to compensation structure, but initiative seems to have fallen flat in 2013. Year-end bonuses for 2012 paid out in 1Q 2013 were well below the target expectations communicated in early 2012.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees what they are worth, so that the company doesn't continue to lose well-qualified employees to competitors. It seemingly would be more fiscally responsible to shareholders to retain the expertise, knowledge, and experience of established employees rather than hiring and training new employees on a frequent basis.

I worked at Morningstar as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Collegial atmosphere. Very down to earth. Broad exposure to many different industry groups. Interns have a lot of responsibility. Looks good on resume

    Cons

Have to work during the year. Had to travel downtown everyday which can be annoying at times. A lot of the work is finding data or sorting through data.
