A less than ideal experience

Doesn't Recommend

I worked at Motorola Mobility as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

The people there are really friendly and are always available to help you. The work involved wasn't too time-consuming. You get to help yourself to free snacks and drinks, and the times are pretty flexible. Working with the team was fun and they were supportive

Cons

Worked on things that weren't very stimulating, basically looked up how to get a new piece of software to work. Didn't get to code very much.

I worked at Motorola Mobility full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Google has started to instill some of it's culture into Motorola, which isn't a bad thing. Teams are being challenged to reduce process, eliminate waste, and focus on executing what matters. The overall direction makes sense but it's hard to know if what's being communicated is truly is direction that Google is taking the company.

    Cons

Since the acquisition, Google has done multiple rounds of layoffs and morale is low. There is an emerging "us versus them" culture as more Googlers are being brought into the business. There is also still a lot of uncertainty about the future of the company after years of eroding market share and poor financials.

    Advice to Management

More needs to be done to retain good people and weed out non-performers. Also, internal advancement below the senior leadership level is non-existent and has been that way for years.

  2. A great place to work if you have an engineering background, with many opportunities to advance and learn.

I have been working at Motorola Mobility full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay is competitive with other engineering jobs. Benefits are very good, with many options. 401k with company match, Portable Pension Plan (for new employees) Opportunities to work in various technical positions and learn new skiils.

    Cons

Struggling to regain profitability, which means constant reductions in force. Very bureaucratic, which slows movement on projects and the ability to make a timely decision. Training is limited (both internal and external) due to the lack of profitability and the reductions in force adding to the workload of the remaining employees.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to reduce load to increase the ability of employees to have training. Put more thought into reductions in force, and the affect it has not only on the people that are let go, but on the remaining employees.
