Pros

Pay is OK compared to similar jobs, low cost of living in a low-crime safe area. Generally a short commute. Small company where you don't feel lost in the shuffle.

Cons

Just a strange culture across the board. Senior management is out of touch. Nepotism is rampant. Middle management is borderline clueless, often making irrational decisions. All the best senior and middle management have been driven away. Complete lack of communication from the top, down. Promotions are very rare below management level. Contrary to company policy, reviews will sit on the VP's desk for as long as a year requiring only a signature, to the point that it has become a punchline. Mac company designing for PC which makes testing, QA and software compatibility a NIGHTMARE. Mac is a religion. Questioning the company's Mac policy, in the past, has cost people jobs.

Advice to Management

Listen to production more. Management needs to think before they act instead of making knee-jerk reactions. As a whole the company needs to open up the purse strings and learn they have to spend money to make money. Holding out over a $200 piece of software to complete a 2 million dollar contract is just silly.

    Pros

Highly talented, skilled and knowledgeable production team.
    Casual-dress Fridays.
Leadership is well-meaning, desiring to run the company as though an extension of their family.
Projects have so much potential if the company would be willing to manage it correctly, market it better, and WAIT for a return rather than putting a site up a month after building it and expecting people to subscribe.

    Cons

    Non-existent employee incentives.
Leadership seems very disinterested and divested in projects.
Madly understaffed, resulting in an overworked production team, who take on the roles of higher paid disciplines without receiving compensation for the newly acquired skillsets, even though employees learn the new trades on their own time at home.
Leadership treats production team like children, speaking about them with middle management as though they weren't there, and disrespectfully responding (or not responding at all) to beneficial suggestions or questions that were meant to help build an array of solutions to rising issues.
Though bringing concerns to Leadership is promoted, employees experience backlash for doing so, generating a fear of voicing opinions.
Leadership makes poor decisions that had they thought about more thoroughly or actually momentarily considered, would have been beneficial, profitable, and cost them nothing.
Leadership takes away privileges for no apparent reason even when production is receiving wildly positive feedback from clients and producing top-notch work, and especially when it costs the company nothing to provide them.
Haven't given a promotion or raise in almost 4 years.

    Advice to Management

Listen and consider advice given from people more experienced than you in marketing and production. You don't have to decide in their favor, but you should absolutely be respecting them and giving what they say some thought.

Give up the pointless imagined power struggles. Nobody is trying to sabotage the company; they are trying to help by asking questions. Responding with a "Why?" is going to get you an answer, so if you're trying to say "no" - say "no".

You have experienced business owners as part of your team. Get some help from them.

Many businesses spend a year building a site before they release it. Don't expect the same amount of quality from less people in less time (by 90% less time even) and then expect people to subscribe. Build it, get a stock of products in the bag, and then release - this would have helped your team from falling behind the schedule.
