I have been working at NASA full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - A space agency second to none in the world. Well known for decades of accomplishments by dedicated teams of highly trained professionals. Trend setting programs and projects. - Named best place to work in the US federal government! Jobs in many areas available beyond the typical astronaut, science, engineering, technology and math fields. Constantly pushes top down for an innovative and diverse team of workers. Excellent benefits including free training classes, affordable health insurance, long term care insurance, vision/dental and life insurance. Flexible healthcare spending accounts where pre-tax pay can be set aside for medical/dental/vision expenses. Annual bonus given. 401k/Thrift Savings Plan with partial government matching dollars. Flexible work hours. Promotes Work From Anywhere/Telework program to balance home and work life. Leave donation program where co-worker can donate vacation time to others run out. - Several paths for promotions/upward mobility at NASA centers.

    Cons

    - Bureaucratic, the down side of government work is the slow rate of change and the red tape in the path of getting work done. - At the mercy of Congress and the President for annual funds. Projects get cut more often each year - Average age of workforce is over the hill and not easily receptive to change making difficult sometimes to implement innovative ideas and diversity in the work place. - awards, promotions and hiring tend to follow the good 'ole boy system of favoritism.

    Advice to Management

    - Break up the good 'ole boy networks. Be receptive to change brought forward by people of all background and age groups. - Push back at congress and the White House for quick approval of annual budgets. - Keep NASA setting the path for others to follow
