Pros

Excellent company culture and environment; employees are valued and career growth is a priority. I have done several internships and this is the best experience I could have asked for. Great pay and benefits, for an internship.

Cons

While msnbc.com moves fast to stay ahead of the curve at at the leading edge of technology, sometimes moves are made without being completely thought out (ie: too fast).

New enthusiasm for fast-paced online news techologies.

    Pros

The pace of breaking news can be akin to a startup pace, where the day-to-day sense of progress and deadlines can be shoved aside for a new event or editorial effort. The mix of media is also rewarding, from immersive Flash interactives to the kind of unique, relevant content to make the best SEO-minded web professional salivate. Colleagues are, by nature, intelligent, quick-witted, sarcastic and earnest about their journalism, readers, professionalism and breadth of knowledge. Online news, journalism and technology can be a pretty amazing mixture. The part I like the best is a long-standing awareness of user-centricism, in the rhetoric of journalists and readers. Online news in very receptive and supportive of arguments that take into account users, and it is refreshing to have that long-running battle largely solved.

    Cons

As with all industries, online news can be irritatingly politicized (beyond just political coverage) and tool development agonizingly slow. News coverage rights and deals are as convoluted and trite as any online advertising or business development deals. For those new to online news, the background sarcasm can be off-putting, as is the repetition and inherent callousness of some coverage. There is a constant battle between advertising revenue and journalism, but its at least more nuanced than many startups running on ad revenue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company is at a crossroads between technology abliity moving from technical minds into the hands of journalists and editors. There's an enthusiasm for learning new tools and techniques that is unevenly distributed to msnbc.com's staff, because it has been weakly described as a focus. The attention is still too focused on the technical how-to, rather than in the language of improving journalism with new tools.
