High expectations of employees, and high accountability. This is a good thing....you have clear, defined standards that won't change without notice.
Job security for those willing to work and be accountable.

Cons

Large variations in promotions depending on your supervisor.
Low starting pay, but in the right branch, for a motivated employee, that can be very short term situation.
A few challenging members.
More back office work than commercial operations.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of Lotus based applications, move them to the friendlier to use Platform. Don't limit raises to a specified range. There is a difference between someone fresh from college, and someone with a family and real world experience that benefits SECU with wisdom and depth of understanding. Especially when either one proves to be a high performer and quickly attains requirements for promotions. Our lending rates must compete more closely, especially mortgages on fixed rates and terms. It is the biggest investment a family will make, and we want the business.

I have been working at NC State Employees' Credit Union full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Rewards top performers. Since the credit union is a non-profit cooperative it cannot be acquired by another financial institution, so job security is extremely high. Extremely dedicated to providing very low cost services to the membership. Support across organization to assure the best of security systems are in place to protect member data.

    Cons

Struggling to implement an organizational structure and management system needed to effective run a $28 billion organization. Since focus is on providing the lowest cost services to membership, operating expenses are kept at a minimum. According to call report salary and benefits are approximately 58% of operating expenses and operating expenses are substantially lower (1.70% versus 2.70% in industry). Salaries are below market, simple math when you look at their heavy investment in facilities and technology.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A lot of senior vice presidents will be retiring within the next five years (this was written in late 2012). It is time to start building out succession planning within the organization. It is time to focus some attention to assure we are ready for a large scale transition that will be occuring in the next 5 years.

I have been working at NC State Employees' Credit Union

    Pros

The North Carolina State Employees Credit Union offers excellent benefits and a good work-life balance. You will never have to worry about taking working home, aside from outside studying for the their module basic program.

    Cons

It is a decent place to work, and as with anything that determination is based upon ones colleagues. Employees are paid well below their counterparts at the same position at other financial institutions.
