You will probably like working for NCI more than contractor for whom you will work after five years.

I worked at NCI

Pros

A growing company that is very good at winning contracts for information technology in support of primarily the military

Did a great job of encouraging their employees and providing support as far as obtaining degrees and certifications.

Will generally support you as an employee in relation to the government customer better than smaller contractors who will pretty much do whatever they think the government wants

Cons

You may not work for NCI if your contract gets moved to a different company. Most contracts get shifted to a new company within five years or so. If NCI wins a recompete it may be as a subcontractor and you might be moved to the new contractor.

A lot depends on your local management. If you have a bad local manager it is difficult to address beyond your locale (I was fortunate to have good management)

Benefits are average

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more upfront with your employees concerning contracting issues. Everyone knows that contracts move from company to company and the employees stay in place, so getting employees to sign statements saying they will only work for NCI is silly and unprofessional.

    I worked at NCI

    Pros

    -exposure to enterprise level systems
    -interaction with Federal government
    -great initial team spirit

    Cons

-glass ceiling in promotions and salary
-no defined career path at local site
-tons of internal and governmental politics
    -limited training budget
-high management turnover. One manager stayed only 2 weeks; average term is 18 months.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to manage you customer. Local management lost millions of dollars because of inability to manage the customers expectations. NCI should offer the customer a list of solutions to implement, not the other way around. Also, document when a solution is rejected;many times NCI takes the blame for not implementing the solution that was presented in the past but had no proof to show the government that the plan was submitted.

    I worked at NCI

    Pros

Great people with wonderful work ethic. The middle management level is great and they are good at providing feedback to employees. The work environment is also good, nice location and newer building.

    Cons

Executive management is all ex-military and very cliquish. They don't seem to have much respect for the creative element required to succeed in the multimedia department.
