I have been working at NCIRE

Pros

smart people work here, and they do cool things (when they can cut through the bureaucracy and drama of the rules and regulations of NCIRE, the VA, and sometimes UCSF).

Cons

no raises in two years for most staff, piddly raises otherwise. no active support for developing staff members (this is what's driving me to move afield). recent benefits changes were poorly implemented. NCIRE is a shell company which holds the research grants for primary investigators; they exist to ensure that research projects get funded and that NCIRE gets their cut of that. Bureaucracy gets in the way of everything. EVERYTHING.

I have been working at NCIRE

    Pros

    *nice ocean view
*after 2 years, 10% of your gross salary is contributed to a retirement account
*low cost dental and vision, ok cost for medical

    Cons

*below market salary (I would estimate 10-15% below average for equivalent position elsewhere)
    *no collective bargaining agreement
*no yearly cost of living salary increase, so your salary basically can decrease over time (medical premiums go up and non-guaranteed merit increases at best match the cost of living salary increases at UCSF)

so much varies by the lab you work in ...

I have been working at NCIRE

    Pros

You're interested in the research at hand. The defined contribution plan rocks (in a time where most employers are cancelling matching contributions, NCIRE puts 10% in your plan whether or not you contribute yourself).

    Cons

Salaries are slightly less than market. Conditions will vary by the lab in which you work. PIs aren't necessarily good people managers. Employees must sometimes satisfy conditions and requirements of the SF VAMC (the institution where NCIRE research is conducted). Lunch options nearby are slim pickins--there's a cafe on site but it really is hospital food (designed to drum up business for the hospital I think...) All the responsibilities of VA employees with nearly none of the perks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better cooperation with the VA would be awesome--sometimes it feels like it's so difficult to get anything done.
