NCR – “Proceed With Caution”
Pros
It's a good place to learn the banking, retail, card processing industries. If you are lucky enough to get into the right area, you can learn a lot. It can be a good place for the first step in a career. Looks good on a resume. Offers benefits.
Cons
Downsizing and reorginization seems to be a constant prescence, significantly hurting morale. Poor work/life balance. Business is cyclical, especially in the ATM area. Employee population is older. Promotions are rare. DIfficult to move and change job roles in the company. No clear career paths.
Advice to Senior Management
Improve the work environment! There are a lot of alternatives to cubes. Sitting in a gray or navy cube in poor lighting is miserable. The color scheme should also be changed to something more stimulating.
You need to aquire and keep young(er) talent. Make this an initiative.
The welcome to NCR "workshop" is largely useless. Develop various programs for mentoring (I had one, but it was in name only) and make sure mentoring occurs. I suffered for lack of it personally and professionally. As a result, so did NCR.
New hires should be put on a rotation (based on qualifications and interests) for the purpose of learning what the business units they will be working with actually do, what their role in the unit affects, and to open their eyes to potential career paths.
Employees should work more in teams. Positions such as Junior Professional Services Consultant, Junior PS Project Manager, etc should be formally created to foster learning and exchange of ideas.
Make sure careers actually develop. Monitor movement of employees. Are they being promoted appropriately? Are they changing job roles? Are they moving between business units?
And make sure to GET FEEDBACK & act on it. I have seen NCR lose a lot of significantly talented people. I've seen a lot of pigeonholing.
TIme to dust off the dinosaur and get creative and proactive.
