Advice to ManagementAdvice

Discontinue the implementation of overall, high level strategic change every 18 months. Its OK to change the tactical methodolgies of how to obtain long term goals, just don't change the long terms goals as often.

Ok company. Potential for success is there but always seems to miss the mark.

I have been working at NEC Corporation of America full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Some decent people to work with. IMO the company seems to have some impressive technology services that have the potential to do really well in the market. Great benefits and 401K program that includes company contributions. NEC is making attempts (albeit baby steps) to help employees progress their career within NEC. Career tracking system just implemented that will help hiring managers see internal candidates first before hiring from the outside. Quarterly meetings held to discuss status of the company and employees can directly speak to CEO or ask very frank questions.

    Cons

Very low morale. The last 5-6 years has been very difficult financially which has resulted in an over worked and under paid workforce. Communication between departments can be lacking. Not all employees held to the same level of accountability and not all employees are rewarded equally. There is no clear company culture and no clear company brand. Many of the employees are not even aware of "what NEC does". IMO this leads to small market presence which leads to more financial difficulties. The saying around here is that NEC stands for Never Ending Change. Someone is always out the door or they are bringing somebody else in to make the company better. CEO changes every 3-4 years and each has a different business philosophy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work to define the NEC brand and really focus on improving employee morale. Focus on the employees that are strong and reward them while stopping the promotion of individuals that do little to no work.

I worked at NEC Corporation of America full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I was a virtual employee and did not have to slog away in an office daily. It was the right opportunity at the right time, although I never felt that as a division we were "firing on all 8 cylinders"

    Cons

VERY interesting working for pseudo American/Japanese management styles. In reality it appeared the US has no teeth and is a puppet for Japan. It always appeared to be the US was a "training ground" for under-qualified Asian employees to spend a couple years state-side then return to their homeland. While there were some really good people there, the majority of the time I felt surrounded by lazy incompetence (try getting a succinct straight answer from a product manager, or getting support to actually engage). After almost a year a new GM was appointed and his act of returning the division to anything close to profitability was to cut 80% of the sales and engineering force (revenue generating field folks, and in fairness many of those cuts were dead weight anyway), however they were never replaced - and they missed the mark with the remaining incompetence that seemed to be on sabbatical from Japan! After a year and a half of continual management berating I basically asked to be fired - wastn going to quit, FIRE ME. (That finally happened last year). Im quite sure Ill never be eligible as a re-hire though. I found my experience to be rocky and unsatisfying professionally.
