Pros

Good salary, career opportunities, benefits that everyone wants, safe. Multicultural place with specialist in almost every kind of area in science. Great for networking.

Cons

For some people feeling safe in a job is equal to relaxing efforts and standards of excellency. In my very personal case, my manager was very hard to work with.

    Pros

appreciate knowledge, research, science, and ability
    most departments pretty well run
    well funded
government benefits but greater emphasis on merit
    flexible work environment
    student loan payoff

    Cons

still part of government so can be slow and bureaucratic, depending on your office
    sometimes stuck with older technology
frequent reorganizations waste a lot of time (endemic to places run by political appointees)

    Advice to Management

Stop re-orging every 3 years. Otherwise, once we get to do our regular work, it's a great place and we like it.

I worked at NIH as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are a lot of different institutes and divisions to gain experience in the government sector.

    Cons

Working as a contractor you are treated a bit like a second class citizen. You are paid less and given less benefits and perks because of your status on campus, but you still have all the hassles and requirements as a regular employee.
