I have been working at NIH full-time for less than a year

Pros

Excellent science, exposure to top-class seminars and scientists

Cons

The workforce (postdocs especially) is slightly more aged than in universities. The visa issues international students have to deal with is painful.

Overall good work environment, but politics can play a big role

I have been working at NIH full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great benefits. Not too stressful. Busy (not some mindless/workless government job), but not too insane. Decent training. Safe campus.

    Cons

If you get in the doghouse, it's impossible to get out. There is a bit of office politics and favoritism. Upper management can be a bit icy. Not the family feel that some companies may have.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't play favorites and stop hindering growth. Allow individuals to be individuals - not everyone is a clone/robot. Also, the micro-managing can be annoying, and the new policies seem to be never-ending. Just go with it for a while. Not everything has to be changed every 5 minutes for upper management to feel like they are doing something.

Great place if you want an academic career

I have been working at NIH full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    -Virtually unlimited lab resources
-No grant writing required, or in some cases not allowed
-There are experts in everything, can learn a lot
-Good salaries, good benefits, very regular and predictable hours (40/wk).

    Cons

-Most research on campus is academic and can be obscure
-No path upwards from postdoc, unless you want to be a life long staff scientist.
-It's very hierarchical. Your opinions don't matter.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

NCATS is a good idea but will become just another institute with its own politics without constant work.
