I have been working at NIH full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Excellent science, exposure to top-class seminars and scientists

    Cons

The workforce (postdocs especially) is slightly more aged than in universities. The visa issues international students have to deal with is painful.

I have been working at NIH full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits. Not too stressful. Busy (not some mindless/workless government job), but not too insane. Decent training. Safe campus.

    Cons

If you get in the doghouse, it's impossible to get out. There is a bit of office politics and favoritism. Upper management can be a bit icy. Not the family feel that some companies may have.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't play favorites and stop hindering growth. Allow individuals to be individuals - not everyone is a clone/robot. Also, the micro-managing can be annoying, and the new policies seem to be never-ending. Just go with it for a while. Not everything has to be changed every 5 minutes for upper management to feel like they are doing something.
