I worked at NRDC

Pros

Great feeling of accomplishment. Motivated coworkers and good benefits. Intelligent motivated staff and management. Good work environment and decent compensation.

Cons

No hierarchy so no promotion. Expected to work extremely hard and into the weekend and evenings. Pay is much lower than in a for-profit.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move people from one program to the other. Don't allow staff to become disinterested or disillusioned with the projects they are working on.

    I worked at NRDC

    Pros

Depending on the department you end up working for, if you are truly interested in the subject matter and have an interest in the field, you'll have the potential to learn fa tremendous amount from some of the leading environmental scientists, attorneys and policymakers in the nation. Simply working there was like being in graduate school - if you have the desire to learn about all of the documents and meetings taking place. If you ask, the opportunity to 'listen in and learn' was easily granted.

My managers were frequently consulted by Federal, State and Local agencies and elected officials for their technical expertise. Very easy-going atmosphere, all managers love their work and respect their colleagues (support staff, Junior and Senior staff) and it shows.

Benefits, vacation days and work-life are the best you will find, and this was not my first job.

    Cons

High reverence for Ivy league schools... unless you can significantly distinguish yourself.

If interested in working for one of the 'Issue Programs' and contributing in a substantive way, and getting paid for it, it's best to come in at the Associate level with a related Master's Degree.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep doing what you're doing.
