Pros

NRECA offers excellent benefits and has attracted a lot of good, long-term employees who always keep in mind they are working for the members who own the local co-ops. They take lot of interest in the health of their employees.

Cons

It has become a very unsettling place to work. A lot of talented people have left either voluntarily or by pink slip, contributing to a major morale problem. Decisions are made by supervisors more by the seat of the pants than with any well thought-out pattern and "saving ones territory" has become the norm, unfortunately.

Advice to Management

The level of communications with mid- and lower-level employees is very poor. The computer system is antiquated. Can't remember the last time anyone in my unit received praise for going above and beyond the call of duty.

Aside from some sub-par management, it's a great place to work.

    Pros

Community feel, pleasant people to work with, competitive salaries, training opportunities.

    Cons

Major changes taking place with new CEO have created an unstable feel. Some departments appear to have better management than others.

    Advice to Management

Take care of the employees who have given so much of their lives to the members of the electric cooperatives.

    Pros

The mission of the electric cooperatives is honorable. In the electric utility industry, co-ops wear the "white hats." For the most part, the employees are engaged in the mission of the organization. You'll find that your co-workers are top-notch. It is a very family friendly place.

    Cons

With a new CEO and new senior management, NRECA is undergoing a pretty substantial change which isn't uncommon during a transition. In some areas, that change is wonderfully articulated. In other areas, folks are kept in the dark.

I think it will take about a year or so (2015), until things finally shake out and a clear leadership course will be set.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your staff.
