I worked at NSTAR Electric full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

The business atmosphere is generally steadier than many other companies, due to its place in the utility industry. As a result, management can take a longer term view of the business and the investments made. Those involved in project work (physicial infrastructure and IT), are more likely to be involved in projects that run to completion, providing a sense of accomplishment.

Cons

The company culture is careful and deliberate. As a result, sometimes decision-making is slower than some will prefer. In addition, employee turnover in many positions is relatively low, so opportunities to advance can be limited.

I worked at NSTAR Electric full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good people to work with. I miss my former colleagues.

    Cons

If you leave this industry, as many of us had to without our choosing... you'll learn quickly that there aren't many other utilities to choose from. Its a detriment to you that you'll have knowledge of a very specialized industry.
Also to note. You will be assigned a storm assignment during severe storms. We were not paid for the additional hours worked. And they were long shifts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's disappointing that so many people and departments were let go after NSTAR was acquired by Northeast Utilities. Cuts were made widely without considering the benefit of holding on to staff who have the knowledge of the industry and the company. I would like to see them bring back former NSTAR employees rather than hire in new people and training them
