I have been working at NYC HRA full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Benefits and job security. Good work life balance. Can get away with not working hard if you choose to do so.

Cons

Hard to move up. Civil service system is flawed. Pay is not very good and lack of overtime can hurt. Management is a joke.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management has no clue what really goes on. Not sure how people get promoted here. You really need to suck up. Civil service is outdated and does not work.

I worked at NYC HRA full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

None whatsoever. I gave a decade of my life to the agency, hoping for better, and I was disappointed time and time again.

    Cons

Everything. Esp within IREA. The commissioner is only concerned with providing raises and incentives to those within his inner circle. No future or advancement possibilities. Employees spend more time and energy creating malicious rumors to entertain themselves. Obscenely racist environment. 80 percent of the staff are educated in John Jay College, and can barely read or write. HRA is an agency run by uneducated, ill-mannered animals that are themselves one paycheck away from being in the street. Pass on this agency with extreme prejudice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn what real work is, learn who your top employees are, and focus on compensating those who work, and not those who do not.
