    Pros

This is a first rate university with very intelligent researchers, professors, etc. You have access to great resources (library, computer systems, etc), and by and large it is a friendly and collegial atmosphere.

The usual perks, like discounts, benefits, gym, that go with academic life are available, and the faculty housing is amazing.

    Cons

While my department is fairly well run (albeit a bit slowly sometimes), the university as a whole seems overly bureaucratic and often jury-rigged. HR is handled through a variety of outdated and frustrating computer systems; the registrar's system once crashed on the first day of school and then they stopped answering the phone.

For a private university embarked on an ambitious building and expansion plan, NYU picks strange places to cut costs. Some of the classrooms are poorly ventilated; others are poorly lit. The pay for postdocs and adjuncts is not great, and while the maintenance workers are invariably competent, the system that keeps things like lights and clocks running leaves something to be desired.

    Advice to Management

Recognize that NYU's current relative prosperity is very fragile - demographically, university enrollments will drop off fairly soon, and in many ways NYU is piggybacking off New York City's current golden age. A bit more attention to the daily life of the school and becoming more efficient administratively, and fewer grandiose plans of dubious benefit to the school and its people, would not go amiss.
