Pros

Tuition remission for many degree and non-degree programs without an extended work commitment. Great location in downtown NYC. Intelligent and motivated colleagues. Good benefits.

Cons

Salaries are lower in an academic/nonprofit setting, compared to other jobs of the same caliber at corporate workplaces. Smaller departments (compared to corporate environments) and unions may make it difficult to advance quickly and/or at regular intervals.

    Pros

Extra compensation for TAing while doing Ph.D

    Cons

After 5 years of funding for Ph.D there is no continued support other than TA

    Advice to Management

Should support Graduate students more after their funding is over with more employment or fellowships.

  2. Fun and lots of freedom - good as adjuncting goes

    Pros

    - freedom to design your own syllabus and lesson plans, choose your own materials - competitive pay

    Cons

    - no health insurance until you've worked there a year and a half - never know until the day before the semester starts what you'll be teaching, or if you'll be teaching at all - only paid for student-facing time, not the time you spend planning and marking ...all the adjunct problems.

    Advice to Management

Hire more full-time teachers so your adjuncts feel there's a reason to stay, some chance of upward mobility.
