I have been working at National 4-H Council

Pros

Opportunity to work towards a socially responsible goal supporting youth development. Name recognition and respect for organization.

Cons

Lack of career growth, opportunities for advancement or promotion. No performance review; no way to understand achievement of goals or job success. Lack of desire to promote from within.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Institute a meaningful performance review process; even if it is not tied to promotions or monetary gains, it is necessary for employees to understand if they are achieving goals or need work in certain areas.

I worked at National 4-H Council

    Pros

There are some great people at the lower levels (Managers and below). Good overall mission. Decent location. Flexible work hours.

    Cons

Non-profits are going through very difficult financial times due to pension funding laws and drop in giving by individual and corporations. Marketing Dept has a revolving door. Questionable decisions being made by top management. Direction of organization (local vs. national vs. international).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Decide what is the most important direction for the organization (local vs. national vs. international). Focus on a message. Reward great employees.

I have been working at National 4-H Council as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very good work-life balance. Complex work that is challenging yet rewarding. Very dedicated employees, most of whom grew up in the 4-H system and have strong personal experiences to draw on when doing their work at the national scope.

    Cons

Highly indecisive upper management. Some political games & silo-ing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make a decision in the presence of good facts and stick to it.

    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
