I worked at National Geographic as an intern (less than an year)

Pros

The work ethic is great, and there is a very positive, productive atmosphere to the place. Everyone was very helpful (I was a paid intern), and interested in getting to know you and help you out. Also, there is a definite benefit to working in the Magazine since it's world-famous and people love it. It's a great place.

Cons

Salary could have been better... but I was an intern, so it was ok.

    I worked at National Geographic

    Pros

Decent/smart people, good work-life balance, courteous environment, some creative freedom. Good brand. Ethical and honest dealings. Did not always agree with rationales behind strategic choices but felt that they were explained well and fairly.

    Cons

Relationships can feel cozy/unbusinesslike. Some employees' obvious and consistent poor performance not confronted or dealt with. Offices are untidy, run-down and showing their age -- a little depressing for such a highly-regarded organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be so obsessed with people fitting into your culture. Get some smart, hardnosed talent in the door to challenge you and raise your game.

Love the NG Brand, but management team is dysfunctional and narcissistic

I have been working at National Geographic full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Nat Geo Mag is best in class. NG Expeditions Group is well run and generates revenue. Most of revenues are from NG Channel. If you work at HQ, amazing opportunities to meet photographers, writers, see films on lunch breaks. I traveled a lot for my job and loved it. Much better than working in the old office building.

    Cons

Management spends more time on lining people up for the next lay off than they do analyzing how to improve their business model. No room for advancement. No interaction between divisions unless you initiate it. No team atmosphere. Bureaucratic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire smart people, provide training and encouragement, pay a fair wage and recognize / reward superior achievements. Send managers to management training or hire better managers. Revolving door of employees and management leads to a feeling of no job security.
