Excellent organization to work for. However, slow to change and entrenched in old ways. Killer benefits package.

I worked at National Geographic full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

National Geographic has a strong reputation for excellence worldwide. The mission of the organization is for the increase and diffusion of geographic knowledge - a noble pursuit. Excellent benefits.

Cons

While the organization creates an excellent range of publications, the vibe internally is quite slow moving. Attention to detail and accuracy are no doubt the reason, but it may be a difficult shift for new employees after working in faster paced companies.

Advice to Management

Make better use of internal talent.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at National Geographic as an intern

    Pros

Interesting place rooted in tradition; learned a lot from NatGeo history sessions and their free library; fun to see how the channel is doing well as a forerunner for nature photography/footage.

    Cons

Feels a little old and outdated. The building, cafeteria and employee base all seemed older, and with journalism and print publications in an overall decline, it seemed like NatGeo was struggling to find its place in an age of rapid technological advancement.

  2. This is a great organization with smart, interesting people. The publishing group has brought out beautiful books.

I worked at National Geographic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great corporate culture, interesting people abound. NatGeo has a history of treating its people well. Having access to the shop and exhibit on the first floor is an added perk.

    Cons

Long-time employees can point to better days but honestly, the Society still is more employee-friendly than any place I've ever worked.

    Advice to Management

The work environment was a little staid sometimes and not as open to innovation,
