I worked at National Grid Gas full-time for more than 8 years

Pros

Good training, secure job, easy life - not a difficult company to work in.

Cons

'old school' practices prevail, no transparency in recruitment or career progression practices. Bad performance is not tackled and good performance is rarely rewarded. Lack of any significant challenges.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce the workforce and become more efficient.

I have been working at National Grid Gas

    Pros

Large company with many departments. Good employee networks especially WIN (Women In Networks). It is good that it is investing in its brand and overall market worth.

    Cons

Distrustful management atmosphere with silo mentality, and generally disrespects educated qualified staff working at the bottom of the organisation. Large sections of the legacy staff at middle and junior management positions are ill educated and ill informed and try their best to discourage any development for their staff. Unfortunately they do not understand their jobs or the environment of a modern commercial environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have more comprehensive and better supported development programs for educated staff working at the most junior levels. Performance monitoring and staff development systems dimply do not account for this.

Mainly highs, but turned to lows following unnecessary out-sourcing of jobs abroad.

I have been working at National Grid Gas full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

As a large company it offered a diverse array of roles and projects to be engaged with.

    Cons

The nature of project work is that it does have a finite end date. This meant your job security in the role was low. National Grid used project roles as a way of being able to keep your base rate lower than the total amount they would pay if they had you on a substantiated role. This effects your pension contributions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to know your people, they are your best asset. Be loyal to them, you will receive much more loyalty in return.
