Pros

Good training, secure job, easy life - not a difficult company to work in.

Cons

'old school' practices prevail, no transparency in recruitment or career progression practices. Bad performance is not tackled and good performance is rarely rewarded. Lack of any significant challenges.

Advice to Management

Reduce the workforce and become more efficient.

    Pros

Interesting work, lots of opportunities to learn new stuff, liked the lunch time seminar presentations on subjects, has a 'national focus', felt I was at the centre of the country, good support groups for various sections of the community if a little too PC. Good facilities at HQ.

    Cons

Salaries are below what other employers would pay, benefits have been eroded with time, staff often stay at same level for years, seems to be able to work out on site you require retraining or doing one of their development training courses - its a bit of a closed shop, can't easily join the Grid, or come in with other experience as they like to grow their own. Lack of car parking at Warwick HQ. Full of graduates and students, more experienced staff/contractors are leaving. You get the feeling that all that matters to senior management is the share price.

    Advice to Management

Pay some decent salaries above what your're paying now (or above), employ more contract staff, open up your 'closed shop' and get other engineers into various roles, do not always rely on cheap labour - graduates/trainees, us experienced engineers who want to work outside but don't need to redo a power degree just to get in when we have one already! The UK Rail industry is more flexible than the Grid is for electrical engineers. Then again it has no competition so they get away with murder!
