I have been working at National Guard part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Varied fields, know schedule a year ahead of time, not 24-7, lots of resources and knowledgable people to help when you have questions, lots of battle buddies

    Cons

career progression differs from civilian side and takes some time to understand,

A tour at the Guard Bureau is challenging, eye opening, and highly rewarding... if you can deal with bureaucracy.

I worked at National Guard full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Wide variety of missions, strong career growth opportunities, culture of mentorship, work/life balance, great pay and benefits, opportunities for travel.

    Cons

Bureaucratic systems can be frustrating, headquartered in the suburbs of VA not near METRO, potential to find yourself professionally pigeonholed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give Guardmen the opportunity to weigh in on process improvement. Soldiers and civilians give tremendously of themselves because they believe in the mission, the best way to honor that is to ensure their time is well spent.
