I worked at National Institute of Standards and Technology

Pros

Lots of equipment and funding for research. Very smart and enthusiastic people all around you. The campus and location are beautiful.

Cons

As with most government organization, there is a lot of bureaucracy. You have to do a lot of paperwork to get your purchasing orders placed, papers published, etc.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to streamline things a little so it is easier to get things done. Simplify the procedures for placing orders, publishing papers, going on travel, etc.

I have been working at National Institute of Standards and Technology

    Pros

Freedom to research new and cutting edge topics, great management and support, and all the new an fancy tools for nanoscience, MEMS, biochemistry, etc. research.

    Cons

Secretarial staff is slow and is inefficient. Administration is a large, confusingly complex, bureaucratic machine that runs on paper; likely is true for most federal facilities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you are doing. Scientist managed by senior scientists is a model that works. Management is respected and valued as mentors and this should always be a focus.
