Scientific Postdoc at NIST

Postdoctoral Fellow (Current Employee) Gaithersburg, MD

Pros*great scientists
*wide array of experts to talk to
*still an academic feel - department/NIST seminars with really interesting scientists, ability to publish papers and expand research skills
*very collaborative research environment

Cons-government bureaucracy - paperwork, things take longer to order, uncertainty with FY budget (from congress, not NIST)
-some delays with renovations because of poor communication between contractors/staff
-some gossip from longer term staff (10 yrs +)

Advice to Senior ManagementToo much information about management (tentative) plans and disagreements leak out when management works on changing directions. It can undermine your plans before they've even had a chance to stand on their own merit.

Pros: Smart co-workers Technical credibility based on Nobel winners in other labs Good… Cons: Bad management at group and division levels favors loyalty over expertise or impact No accountability for administrative or scientific screw-ups. Bad people rise and cling… Advice to Senior Management: Your choices matter: Around the ethical climate, new overhead rates, who you put in management, what you tolerate in terms of dysfunction in administrative… No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company… More
