I have been working at National Instruments full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

A youthful company with large growth and opportunities in a city that is good to start a career in. The vision of the company is unique and the upper management understands the need to invest in people (especially R&D). They have never had a layoff in all 31 years of the companies history.

Cons

The pay is lower than most other tech companies. I estimate about 5-15%. That comes from NI taking advantage of the great location and low cost of living. Also it is easy to become jaded after a few years because you forget how bad other companies can be.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would like every 3 years to cut the bottom 2% performers. I think we get a little dead-weight because of how attractive the company is.

I worked at National Instruments as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Very laid back company. Very great with work-life balance. They also encourage movement within the company to get different experiences.

    Cons

As far as the intern program went, they left it up to each manager to decide how to deal with their intern. Mine wasn't particularly interested in telling me how I was doing. The intern program also let the managers decide within a few weeks whether they would ask you back for the Fall. So the next 8 weeks after that were basically lame duck if you didn't get asked back.
