I have been working at National Instruments full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

The company culture is fantastic - people are approachable, the attitudes are positive, there's a lot of energy in every department. Most departments have a great work hard/play hard approach. If you work hard/smart there are good opportunities to move into new roles and advance in the company. NI hires bright, motivated people that want to get things done. NI is also very stable - there's never been a layoff and the company is run in a conservative manner.

Cons

Over time, as the company has grown, some bureaucracy has set in the makes it more difficult to get things done as compared to the past. The bureaucracy is not nearly as bad as many other companies, however. Also, the total compensation package of the company used to be above average and had some unique advantages; however, as the company has grown the overall compensation has become pretty average.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out ways to differentiate the total compensation package from the rest of the industry.

    Pros

Great starting wages for newly graduated engineers. Awesome work environment and culture. Super nice Austin campus and a real 21st century attitude toward the work life.

    Cons

Hard to move up. Very slow to increase pay. Often stuck in their ways. Their fast growth has caused some jam-ups with employee retention and promotion. In recent years, decisions that were good for shareholders were not so good for employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay better to keep longer term technical employees. Increase level of additional benefits to match what other high-tech companies are offering their employees. You are falling behind.

I have been working at National Instruments full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It's not a strict corporate atmosphere. I feel like I am working with good, excited people. Management truly seems to value employee job satisfaction.

    Cons

Pay is only OK. It can be difficult to reach consensus at times. Projects vary greatly in importance and impact to the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider increasing pay, and give engineers and managers better tools to make decisions.
