Pros

Being able to work outside a large portion of the time, and with like minded people. Being able to educate the public on the cultural and natural resources!

Cons

.. it is the government, so it can be stressful when things are always hanging in the balance.

    Pros

Work in places that are rich in history and/or environment. Visitors interested. Very satisfying to work with the visitors. Most visitors appreciate of attention they receive from Park Rangers.

    Cons

Hours, low pay and poor management. Park Rangers in interpretation who do tours and educational programs are the front line for the park service. Over 50% are seasonal with no benefits. There is little appreciation for the loyalty and dedication of these employees from management.

    Advice to Management

Show support for your front line employees who are the ones who are making the visitor experience a wonderful one and keeps people supporting our National Parks. Do not make your seasonal employees feel disposable.

    Pros

If you like the outdoors and history this may be the job for you. If you *really* like working with the public and are comfortable talking in front of groups, the NPS offers relatively well-paid positions during the summer season.

    Cons

It's is very difficult to move up to Permanent/Term employment as there are too many highly qualified people seeking too few openings. Many seem unmotivated and senior management is more politically driven and isolated from the rank and file. Truly condescending.

    Advice to Management

I'm very glad we have elections every four years in this country.
