I have been working at National Park Service full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Getting to work in beautiful places, historic places. Working with co-workers who are dedicated to the mission. Serving visitors who love Park Rangers and love the national parks.

    Cons

The Peter Principle is alive and well in the National Park Service -- most of upper management is very incompetent, totally out of touch with the field staff, and shows little care, concern or support for the field and seasonal staff. Most of my colleagues in most parks seems to feel there is a huge morale problem. Also, many of the jobs are seasonal, and seasonal staff is not recognized for their commitment or contributions like permanent staff is.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

First of all, get out in the parks, talk to field and seasonal staff -- ask them what you think is working well, what isn't working well, and ask them for their ideas, and really, truly, LISTEN. Make them feel appreciated for working 10, 15 and 20 seasons for little pay and doing it with a smile on their face. Make them feel like you care, and they matter.

I have been working at National Park Service part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great environment to work in. Working at the National Park Service has been an enjoyable experience. Employees are passionate about what they do. Great people to work with and for.

    Cons

With the National Park Service being a government agency, the workplace can be more strict that other companies. It can be difficult to get a foot in the door with the regulations regarding the hiring process and who you have to compete with.
