National Semiconductor Senior Manager in Santa Clara, CA:   (Current Employee)

Pros

Good benefits, competitive compensation, an HR department that cares about the employees, centrally located in Silicon valley, stable company. Competent, honest workforce which is typically given the proper tools to do their work.

Cons

Senior management is driven solely by cost-cutting, has no clue how to grow new businesses. Company has continually shrunk for the last 6 yrs. Profit margins are good but no significant new products have emerged during this span. Many employees bored and are just going through the motions. 10 years ago many employees put in 50+ hour workweeks. Now the parking lot is close to empty by 5:30pm.

Advice to Senior Management

Bring in some fresh blood rather than constantly promoting from within. Try to understand that continually making engineers account for every penny their projects spend is a sure way to stifle creativity. Get the bean counters off people's backs.
