I have been working at Navistar

Pros

The new campus is a great way to network with colleagues and learn more about the business units. There are several opportunities available to hear senior leadership present and explain issues with the business. Great opportunities to learn about global expansion since the company is so new to it.

Cons

Politics X 10. Individuals are promoted to manager with no management expertise. Such promotions lead to micromanaging and high attrition rates.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a deep look at those in your organization and make the "cut" if they are not performing. Keeping someone around who does not bring value to the organization reduces confidence in your position. No one likes to be the "bad" guy, but rewarding those for the wrong reasons hurts everyone involved.

I have been working at Navistar

    Pros

Generally good and bright people. Great product lines except for new engines. Terrific new world headquarters campus.

    Cons

Senior leadership tends to view employment at Navistar as a caste system. Bright people in mid-management are neutered by top executives. Bonuses are non-uniformally applied and unfairly reallocated from mid-level management to upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company success should be placed ahead of ego. Employees need to be treated with more respect and fairness (compensation).

Navistar doesn't promote loyalty, knowledge retention, or the right people.

    I worked at Navistar

    Pros

Navistar offers a rewarding experience and unique challenges. They encourage knowledge expansion and cross-training so its great for personal growth.

    Cons

They are tending toward hiring upper management who are not familiar with the industry and are considered businessmen in their own right. This creates managers who don't respect the historical talent nor their employees' experience. Navistar has become highly politicized internally therefore the best ideas and methods rarely make it. They have recently let go a sizable portion of their knowledge-base and have moved operations to a higher cost area. They will be hiring inexperienced engineers fresh out of college and relying on them more than they should. I'd be wary about any long term plans with Navistar.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect your grunts, be honest with them and consult the lower levels before making decisions. You've built a structure where the higher you go the less you know what it takes to get things done.
