Current Employee - Intern  in  Washington, DC
Current Employee - Intern in Washington, DC

Pros

When it comes to social justice, there are not many jobs available. The staff is very eager to help develop you, and truly do care about you as an individual.

Cons

At least with regards to being an intern, there was a lot of busy work that I had to do. I felt that a lot of the time I wasn't learning anything and instead simply filing papers and getting the mail.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

A more structured program for interns.

Former Employee - Analyst  in  Washington, DC
Former Employee - Analyst in Washington, DC

    Pros

The NCLR brand and public reputation. Opportunities for advocacy on issues of significance to Latinos. Good starting place for entry level professionals with advanced degrees. Sophisticated issue managers. Sophisticated in-house publishing capabilities.

    Cons

Harsh, punitive corporate culture. Poor employee morale. Exceptionally poor work-life balance. High rates of staff turnover. For non-senior staff, poor physical environment for work given the emphasis on the production of publishable written work...densely packed cubicles without the benefit of sound proofing. Bottom line...if you have acquired previous professional policy experience in the nonprofit sector or government, skip the pain and don't apply here. You won't tolerate the nonsense.
