NetApp evolving into large company. Not as great a place to work anymore.

Current Employee - Sales Manager in Vienna, VA

I have been working at NetApp

Pros

+ decent healthcare benefits, but costs has risen as well
+ pockets of good management
+ excellent spinmasters in sales
+ compelling technology helps drive sales
+ current sales momentum helps bring in referential business
+ they are attempting to learn what processes need to be improved for bottom line regardless of impact to employee

Cons

- company is starting to sacrifice employee benefits and compensation for bottom $ i.e. exec compensation
- corporate credit card issued, no more reward points for frequent travelers. Company spouts benefits to company and ignores the disadvantages to the employee. Once again, benefiting exec compensation.
- Peter Principle of stellar sales folks being promoted to incompetent managers is in full force
- expects work hours to take priority over personal time
- well-being and benefits to employee are becoming more back-burner
- evolving into a mindset very similar to other large companies. The employee-corporate direct relationship and feedback is fading. Middle management politics is filtering true employee feedback.
- more emphasis on feedback protocol, where it was once refreshing to be able to send email to anyone in the company

Good, not great, for eng/prod mgmt

    I worked at NetApp

    Pros

=> Very high trust environment. For instance, no "expense report authorizations" required. Just do what you think is right and don't abuse it
    => Not cut-throat, collegial
=> Successful company with good product portfolio

    Cons

=> surprisingly old (lots more "30 year tech veterans from Amdol" than 5 year out of school kids)
=> Rampant title disparity, some corporate staff roles do zero work (and earn Senior Director or VP titles) while line jobs (eng, prod mgmt, sales mainly) are carrying a huge load for Manager or Director title. Sounds petty, but it's really frustrating to the line
=> Surprising amount of red tape in the product development orgs - we're talking 16 months to get a feature included in a new release, and getting slower! Simply not nimble

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the respect you show your employees - it does make NetApp a place you want to work. Consider a youth movement (try recruiting from grad schools, not just industry hires). The place is on the way to becoming HP (and I don't mean that in a good way)

I have been working at NetApp

    Pros

Great people, great management, excellent benefits, products that are unique and therefore easy to sell. Company is growing, and a testament to the customer value of the products is that NetApp grew during the recent economic downturn.

    Cons

Understaffed in some areas results in overworked staff in those areas.
Top focus areas get all the attention and funding, resulting in disenchantment elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to do a better job of recognizing and funding those areas that are critical but are not in the top focus areas.
